Where Has My Passport Been? Rethinking Digital Identity in Caribbean Tourism

A personal story that challenges the future of tourism in Curaçao and the Caribbean

Last night, I was booking our next family vacation. Six seats, two rooms, one rental SUV, excursions. Then came the usual request:
“Please send a copy of your ID to confirm your reservation.”
I’ve done this dozens of times. Take a picture, scan, email, upload, or even WhatsApp it for a last-minute booking.

My daughter’s innocent question the next morning stopped me cold: “Where has my passport been?” She meant stamps. I thought of servers and reservation desks.
But it got me thinking, where does my digital ID actually go after I send it??  Is it stored or erased? Who has access to it?  Is my ID still traveling when I’m not?

As a parent, traveler, and someone who works in modern workplaces and IT integrations, this isn’t just a passing traveler’s concern, it’s a wake-up call for how we, as Tech and Tourism industry, still handle identity and trust.

What Travel Should Feel Like in the Digital Age

My best travel experience wasn’t just about the destination, it was about that extra peace of mind. The hotel offered secure seamless pre-check-in. My ID was verified digitally, no extra forms or photocopies.
My wife and I arrived, received our real authentic warm welcome, and started our long romantic weekend without friction. That’s what travel should feel like: safe, simple, and personal, both for us and the receptionist.
Behind the scenes, thoughtful digital tools made it happen, faster for the guest, easier for the staff, and safer for everyone. And that’s a major quality winner for the tourism industry.

Curaçao Is Booming, But Are We Digitally Ready?

Curaçao welcomed over 700,000 stayover visitors in 2024, a 20% year-over-year increase.
From digital nomads and cruise passengers to families like mine, the demand is real, and it keeps growing. See, with that growth comes a responsibility:

Why are we still relying on email attachments and paper forms to collect information?
Do our systems talk to each other, or are we stuck in digital silos?
Can our operation scale with smarter tech, not just more staff?
Can our guest journey securely scale with demand, without compromising our “Dushi” experience?
Are we building for trust, speed, and digital ease?

If we want to preserve our “Dushi” experience while meeting global expectations, we need to transform how we handle identity and guest journeys.

The Future of Travel: Trust, Tech, and Transformation

We often think of passports and IDs as documents to cross borders. And while the physical passport remains, digital identity is evolving:
Verified once. Used securely across services. Owned by the traveler.
This is the future of travel, and it’s already happening at the border. From biometric boarding to decentralized digital IDs, the tools exist. The question is: are we ready to adopt them for the rest of the journey?
In an era where privacy matters and time is precious, this shift isn't just optional, it’s expected, and you should demand it.

In the future, when my growing twins ask me, “Where have our passports been?”, I want to smile and say: “Everywhere. But now, they travel smarter and safer.”
It starts with the decisions we make today. Let’s make sure the entire travel experience, from first booking to final check-out, does too.
